Drug Policy

The “war on drugs” has failed, and drug use is increasing with tremendous cost to society. The attempt to prohibit the use of drugs has no more chance of success than did the failed Prohibition attempt to stop the consumption of alcohol. The cost to our country of the criminal activity which arises out of drug use is tremendous.

We need to legalize the use of drugs and control their distribution. We must stop wasting billions of dollars on efforts to prevent the importation of drugs into the country and focus on education, treatment and rehabilitation of users.

It is pointless and futile to try to tell people what they can and cannot do. We may not be able to stop the use of drugs, but we can stop the crime that comes with our failed “war on drugs”.

We should review the records of imprisoned minor offenders and release those who pose no threat of harm to society. This would lower the growing cost of prison operation and free up space for those who should be there.
